Desmond Meade, president of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, campaigned vigorously for voting rights in his state and said success came focusing on the stories of people closest to the problem and closest to the pain.

The strategy paid off: In 2018, Florida voters passed Amendment 4 with over two-thirds of the voting population approving. The amendment restores voting rights to 1.4 million Floridians previously disenfranchised because of their conviction history.
